A WORKSHOP HOSTED BY : POCOSIN ARTS SCHOOL OF FINE CRAFT
Columbia, North Carolina, USA
Nora Kovats will be teaching an online experimental enamelling workshop hosted and organized by Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft. Anyone with a secure internet connection can participate; however, you need your own enamelling kiln and other equipment.
Workshop details:
You will learn a variety of different enamelling techniques with the aim of creating expressive, emotionally compelling surfaces for your jewellery pieces. Ideally you can further experiment with these techniques and apply them to your unique artistic visual language.
We will start with conventional dry-sifting with a focus on color theory, then quickly move into more experimental techniques such as firescale manipulation with transparent layering, pull-through/break-up technique, bubbly effects with water/oil-based enamels, creating 3D-structures with glass beads and binding wire, experimenting with sand and flooding/water-based surface manipulation.
Towards the end of the second session, one of the enamelled pieces done in the previous session will be chosen to be set into a brooch, showing how to complete it with a hand-pierced silver setting and pin as seen on the image above.
Previous enamelling experience is an advantage, though not strictly necessary if you are a fast learner. However, the brooch setting requires previous metalwork experience.
This is a two-part demonstration course in two sessions:
